With the popularization of various digital high-definition audio and video equipment, traditional analog signals, such as AV interface, S video, component video and VGA interface, can no longer meet the needs of mass data stream transmission. As the first uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to be supported, the HDMI interface quickly became the interface for Blue-ray players, LCD HDTVs, game consoles and even PCs. A variety of VDWALL processor, such as video processor LVP602, LVP603 and video switcher LVS5066, are equipped with HDMI interface. How much do you know about HDMI interface? How does the LVP603 with one HDMI and one DVI interface receive two DVI or two HDMI signals? Here we briefly explain the features of the HDMI interface of VDWALL products, in order to get a brief view of HDMI interface.


  • 1. Introduction of HDMI

HDMI is a short abbreviation of "High Definition Multimedia Interface". The HDMI interface can provide a data transmission bandwidth of up to 5Gbps, and can transmit uncompressed audio signals and high-resolution video signals avoid digital/analog or analog/digital conversion during signal transmission, greatly enhance noise signal ratio, improve audio and video transmission reliability and quality. HDMI version 1.4 not only added support for 4K2K resolution and 3D functions, but also added functions such as Ethernet network connection.


The HDMI signal adopts the same TMDS signal (Transition Minimized Differential signal) as the DVI signal, and is completely compatible with the DVI signal. Compared with DVI signals, HDMI signals have greatly improved in the following aspects:

1) Better anti-jamming performance, can achieve gain-free transmission up to 20 meters.

2) Optimized for LCD HDTV, with good compatibility.

3) Support EDID and DDC2B standards, automatically identify and select best resolution.

4) Robust copyright protection mechanism (HDCP) , effectively protect transmission piracy.

5) Support 24bit color depth format, (RGB, YCbCr4-4-4, YCbCr4-2-2).

6)Smaller interface for easy plug in and out.

7)Audio and video transmission with single cable, more reliable and lower engineering cost.

8) Completely compatible with DVI interface.

9) Support hot plug technology.


  • 2. HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)

The most common problems encountered with HDMI interface are related to HDCP. In order to protect copyright, some high-definition DVDs or Blu-rays will use HDCP for encryption. If the HDMI receiving device does not support HDCP function, the video content will be unwatchable. The HDMI interface is just DVI signal direct conversion, don’t enabled of HDCP function.


  • 3. Compatibility of HDMI and DVI signals

Although HDMI is compatible with the DVI signal, only DVI-to-HDMI cable are not guaranteed to receive PC signal. As an interface designed for consumer electronic products, HDMI mainly supports HD/SD video formats of TV standards (such as 1080P, 576I, etc.), while DVI, which is a PC standard interface, supports PC output formats (such as 1024x768 75hz ,1600x1200 60HZ and other formats), therefore, it must be ensured that the DVI interface supports the TV video format. So as the consumer device with DVI interface and Blu-ray HD DVD player with HDMI interface.


  • 4. LVP603: DVI interface and HDMI interface are fundamentally compatible.

VDWALL all series product with HDMI interface are completely compatible with HDCP, and accessible with TV color format and PC format. In another word, VDWALL HDMI interface is compatible with blue-ray DVD and graphics card DVI signal via format conversion cable. Simultaneously, DVI port also can receive HDMI signal through HDMI to DVI cable.
